Local 1991 members stood outside the W South Beach Hotel to protest Carnival Cruise Lines during their shareholders meeting on Wednesday, April 11th. A crowd of people gathered outside the hotel to demand that Carnival Cruise Lines — which generates about $2 billion a year yet pays 1% in taxes — pay their fair share.

Local 1991 member Danielle Fleurme, RN, recently joined thousands of other SEIU members and labor activities for the Selma to Montgomery March in Alabama. The event re-enacted the Selma to Montgomery March in Alabama and highlighted new attacks on voting rights, immigrants’ rights, workers’ rights and education.

CEO Carlos Migoya recently issued a policy prohibiting employees from participating in media interviews while on Jackson property, even when employees are off-duty. “We are appalled with today’s announcement of massive layoffs at Jackson. This is what you get when you hire a billionaire banker and then cut him loose to take a chainsaw to healthcare in Miami-Dade County. It’s unbelievable that he wouldn’t consult the nurses, doctors and healthcare professionals — who have sacrificed out of their pockets to keep Jackson afloat — about how his plan to ‘right size’ the system might harm patient care.
