Call Your Commissioners Before the Mayor Vetoes the 5%
We won an important victory last week, when the County Commission voted to return the 5% to all the county union workers. However, the Mayor is expected to veto the vote by Friday, Dec. 13. That means that the Commission will likely vote to overturn the veto on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Now is the time to call and remind them to hold the line.
Commission Votes to Return the 5%!
A grueling and contentious 12-hour hearing for seven county unions ended Dec.5 with an 8-3 vote in favor of returning the 5% to county employees. The Mayor may veto the decision, which would trigger another vote to override his veto, as occured when the Commission approved the 5% for Solid Waste workers earlier this fall.
The Good, the Bad and the Gimenez of the 5% Debate
The showdown between County Mayor Carlos Gimenez and thousands of county workers will come down to how the County Commission weighs the arguments on both sides. So far, the Commission has sided with the workers who were promised an end to the 5% contribution. But Gimenez is working hard to change their minds in his favor.

Jackson Health System announced an unprecedented budget surplus Wednesday of nearly $45.8 million dollars. On November 5, the voters of Miami-Dade County approved a bond issue worth nearly $830 million dollars to upgrade Jackson’s aging facilities.
