“Vote for immigration reform and I’ll stop calling”

By SEIU President Mary Kay Henry

20130531-CIREmailButton-PURPLEIn 2007, while activists and aspiring citizens from all walks of life marched and rallied, opponents of immigration reform sat on their couches and made call after call to members of Congress.

Ultimately, their direct contact to lawmakers decided the fate of comprehensive immigration reform–and it didn’t go in our favor.

Six years later, Congress is considering a new bill that will provide a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants in America. This time around, we know what we all have to do to win. That’s why we’re asking you to make one call per day, for the next week, until the Senate votes to support commonsense immigration reform with a roadmap to citizenship.

Let’s beat the naysayers at their own game.

Just today, President Obama publicly challenged us to be more active on immigration reform than ever before. Our President’s ask is a timely one – the Senate is likely to vote on immigration bill S. 744 in mid-June. And in order for this legislation to have a real chance at passing. we don’t just need every Democrat on our side–we need Republicans too.

We’re going to need to pass this bill with strong bi-partisan support in order for the legislation to survive, which is why it’s imperative your Senator hear from you now. Legislative strategists have determined that it takes at least 100 calls per day to sway how a Senator votes. Just 100 calls a day can make or break a piece of legislation.

Commit to calling your Senator for the next week. Just 7 simple phone calls could literally change the landscape of immigration in our country.

When it’s all said and done, don’t you want to know that you did absolutely everything you could do to pass this legislation?

The most effective thing you can do is just pick up the phone and call.

Be 1 of 100 callers to tell your Senator every day that you support commonsense immigration reform that includes a roadmap to citizenship for 11 million aspiring Americans.
