Miami Herald: Senate Medicaid plan would cut funding for Jackson, safety-net hospitals
Miami’s Jackson Health System could see its crucial Medicaid funding cut by $46 million, or about 13 percent of what it was expecting, under a bill that is scheduled for a floor vote in the Senate by the end of the week.
New Stewards Empowered and Inspired at Workshop
More than two dozen stewards gathered last week for an all-day workshop held at Local 1991 offices in Miami Gardens.

Closer to home, Local 1991 members were active in speaking out about healthcare expansion and safe staffing, and helped Jackson North get approval for a helipad needed in order to build a Level II trauma center there.
Local 1991 Member Blasts Ryan Budget Proposal
If Congressman Paul Ryan could talk to patients like the young man Denise Glass, RN, saw last week in the Jackson emergency room living with a large, painful testicular mass he couldn’t afford to get treated, he might reconsider his disastrous budget plan. “Everybody told me I need to go the hospital but I don’t have any money,” the patient told his nurses. “I got my wife and kids and I work, but you know I just don’t have more money for the hospital. Can you just do something so I can go to work?”

Helipad at Jackson North Approved
The North Miami Beach City Council approved a helipad for Jackson North on March 19, thanks in part to the the large crowd of supporters that included the healthcare professionals of JHS. Local 1991 president Martha Baker, RN, was in attendance with a contingent from Jackson North and many others.

Local 1991 Members Get Political
Florida senators and representatives spent the last week of February in their home districts meeting with residents in preparation for the 2013 legislative session. Local 1991 members took advantage of the opportunity to meet with their legislators about priority issues such as Medicaid expansion.
