It’s Groundhog Day… Again…for 5% Win
First, the good news: We won! The County Commission voted 8-5 to return the 5% to county workers. The bad news: eight isn’t enough to be veto proof.
5% Fight is Back On Jan. 16!
The County Commission has voted three times to do the right thing for county workers. After the Mayor’s last veto, the Commission voted 8-5 in our favor — just one short of the two-thirds required to return our 5%. Round (what are we up to here – 50?) commences Jan. 16. Be there to fight for what’s right.
Commission Votes to Return the 5%!
A grueling and contentious 12-hour hearing for seven county unions ended Dec.5 with an 8-3 vote in favor of returning the 5% to county employees. The Mayor may veto the decision, which would trigger another vote to override his veto, as occured when the Commission approved the 5% for Solid Waste workers earlier this fall.
The Good, the Bad and the Gimenez of the 5% Debate
The showdown between County Mayor Carlos Gimenez and thousands of county workers will come down to how the County Commission weighs the arguments on both sides. So far, the Commission has sided with the workers who were promised an end to the 5% contribution. But Gimenez is working hard to change their minds in his favor.
5% Hearing Set for Dec. 5
It’s baaaack — the fight for our 5%! The County Commission has scheduled impasse hearings for most county unions, including ours, on Dec. 5. Get in the fight!
Jackson Bond Passes!
Voters overwhelmingly approved the Jackson bond by 65%. It represents a critical step in making the future of community health in Miami brighter for all. It would not have happened without the nurses, doctors and healthcare professionals in SEIU Local 1991.

On Monday, Oct. 21, Jackson employees will be sponsoring a lunchtime picnic and rally to urge people to get out and vote on important issues. Join us for food, music and more! After the picnic, members who are off duty will travel to the Stephen P. Clark Government Center to cast their ballots.
